Warren W. Wood
Citation
The award for Distinguished Service is presented to Warren W. Wood (pictured here) in recognition of his dedicated service to the Hydrogeology Division, to the Geological Society of America, and to the disciplines of hydrogeology and aqueous geochemistry. He has been a member of GSA since 1961 and, in 1989, he was selected as the Birdsall Distinguished Lecturer by the Division. He has served on the Nomination and Birdsall Committees and, in 1993, served as the Program Chair for the National Meeting in Boston. He continued to provide outstanding service to the Division by serving on the Hydrogeology Division Management Board from 1994 to 1998 and as Chair in 1997. Through the years, he made numerous presentations with co-authors at GSA sectional and national meetings on diverse topics that include artificial recharge, dissolved gases in semi-arid zones, playa lakes, origin of caves, solute diffusion, origin of saline lakes, macropore recharge, and aqueous geochemistry of aquifer systems. In 1996, he co-chaired a Symposium in honor of John Bredehoeft. He has been a Fellow of GSA since 1980.
For the last 20 years, Warren W. Wood has formulated and directed an interdisciplinary application of physical and chemical principles to understand ground-water systems, address classical geologic problems, and seek solutions to critical societal problems. He has worked with numerous colleagues at the USGS and in Universities and Research Institutes. He has served as an advisor to 25 M.S. and Ph.D. students at many Universities in the U.S. and foreign countries. His current research involves the hydrogeology of sabkhas, eolian transport of salts from playas, recharge in arid areas, and the use of chemical-stress tests to determine hydrologic parameters of fractured rocks. His research is being conducted in locations in North America and in Australia, Botswana, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. For his many scientific contributions and for his outstanding service to the profession and to GSA, the Hydrogeology Division presents Warren W. Wood with the Distinguished Service Award. |
