Leonard F. Konikow

Citation

The award for Distinguished Service is presented to Leonard F. Konikow (pictured here) in recognition of his dedicated service to the Hydrogeology Division, to The Geological Society of America, and to the discipline of hydrogeology. He has been a member of GSA for about 30 years. He has been an active member of the Division-giving numerous talks and organizing several symposia or theme sessions over the years on special topics in hydrogeology. During his four-year tenure on the management board of the Hydrogeology Division, he strived to strengthen the technical content and scientific value of the GSA annual meetings, and he helped to modernize the Division's bylaws, rules and regulations. He served as chairman of the management board from 1993-1994, during which time he played a key role in starting up the Shirley Dreiss Memorial Fund. These funds were designated to help support the Division's Distinguished Lecture Series.

Konikow has served the Hydrogeology Division of GSA on the Nominations Committee and on the Meinzer Award Committee, among others. He has also served on several GSA committees, including the Selection Committee for the Young Scientist Award and the Committee on the Penrose Medal. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of America. Konikow was honored to be selected as the GSA Hydrogeology Division's Birdsall Distinguished Lecturer for 1985-1986, and he received their prestigious O. E. Meinzer Award in 1997.
