Mary Jo Baedecker

The award for Distinguished Service is presented to Mary Jo Baedecker (pictured here) in recognition of her dedicated service to The Geological Society of America, Hydrogeology Division, and the hydrogeologic community. Dr. Baedecker joined GSA in 1977 and became a fellow in 1995. As a member of GSA and the Hydrogeology Division, she served on the Meinzer Award Committee, 1985-1987, serving as Chair in 1987, and on the Nominating Committee from 1990-1992. She was Program Chair for the Division for the 1996 Annual Meeting in Denver and served on the Management Board from 1997-2000. She served as Chair of the Hydrogeology Division in 1999. Through the years, she has made numerous presentations at GSA meetings and co-taught a GSA short course on organic geochemistry. In 1999, she was a member of the GSA Division Chairs’ Group to discuss strategic planning and communication between GSA and the Divisions.

Mary Jo has served the hydrogeologic community in a number of ways. In 1993, Mary Jo was the Darcy Lecturer for the Association for Ground Water Scientists and Engineers and in 1994, she was the Ineson Lecturer for the Geological Society of London. She was a member of the National Research Council that authored the 1994 report “Alternatives for Ground Water Cleanup,” and she currently serves on the NRC Committee “Source Removal of Contaminants in the Subsurface.” She has served on several national research committees as well as those of professional societies. She has mentored many students and served on numerous dissertation committees at several universities.

For these and other selfless contributions, the Hydrogeology Division presents Mary Jo Baedecker with the Distinguished Service Award for 2002.
